Who is this program designed for?

BCRA serves students in 1st through 4th grade who need to build or strengthen foundational reading skills. Our program is designed for children who are working on decoding, phonics, phonemic awareness, and early reading fluency. Students are grouped by reading level, not grade, to ensure every child receives instruction that meets them exactly where they are.

At this time, BCRA is not equipped to provide the specialized intervention that students with a diagnosed reading disability such as dyslexia require. Our foundational reading program is designed for general early literacy development, not intensive remediation.

Every student begins with a free placement assessment. This assessment identifies where a student falls within the foundational reading sequence and allows us to match them with other students at or near the same reading level. Cohorts are kept small — a maximum of 4 students per instructor — to ensure every child receives meaningful attention in each session.

If we do not have enough students to fill a cohort at your child’s reading level, your child will be placed on a waitlist. We will notify you as soon as a cohort becomes available. We never place students in a group that does not match their level, because doing so would undermine the effectiveness of the instruction.

Classes meet twice a week — Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesday and Thursday. Each session covers one structured lesson. Students also receive take-home practice materials after each session to reinforce what was covered in class. This combination of in-person instruction and consistent at-home practice is a core part of the BCRA model.

The foundational reading program contains 128 lessons. At the standard pace of two lessons per week, students who begin at the beginning of the sequence would complete the program in approximately 64 weeks, or about one and a half school years. Students who enter mid-sequence will complete in less time. Progress depends on each child’s individual pace and the consistency of at-home practice.

Parent participation is not optional — it is a core requirement of the BCRA model. After each session, students bring home practice materials. Parents are expected to complete these materials with their child before the next class. Consistent at-home reinforcement is what allows children to keep pace with the lesson plan. Families who are unable to uphold this commitment may be asked to pause or exit the program to ensure fairness to other students and the integrity of each cohort.

BCRA charges a one-time enrollment fee of $20. There is no deposit, no materials fee, and no placement test charge. Tuition is charged per lesson. We offer a tiered pricing structure — $5, $10, $15, or $20 per lesson — so families can choose what is affordable for them. Our full-rate tier is $20 per lesson, which covers program costs. Lower tiers are available because the mission matters more than revenue.

BCRA is a community-based reading program founded on the belief that access to high-quality literacy instruction should not be limited by a family’s income. Our tiered pricing reflects that mission directly.
